Transurethral Resection Of The Prostate (TURP)

Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a surgical procedure used to treat urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate, a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). TURP involves removing portions of the prostate gland to relieve pressure on the urethra and improve urine flow.

During TURP, a resectoscope is inserted through the urethra to reach the prostate. Using this instrument, the urologist carefully removes excess prostate tissue obstructing urine flow. The procedure is performed under spinal or general anesthesia and typically takes about 60 to 90 minutes. Most patients require a short hospital stay post-surgery and can resume normal activities within a few weeks. TURP is considered the gold standard treatment for BPH due to its effectiveness and durability of results.

  • Monopolar TURP : In monopolar TURP, an electric current is passed through a single wire (electrode) to remove prostate tissue. The procedure is performed using a saline solution to irrigate the surgical area. While effective, monopolar TURP carries a slight risk of complications such as electrolyte imbalance or TUR syndrome, a rare condition caused by the absorption of the irrigation fluid.
  • Bipolar TURP : Bipolar TURP uses a different technology, where the electric current passes between two electrodes at the tip of the surgical instrument. This allows the procedure to be performed using a saline solution, which reduces the risk of complications associated with monopolar TURP. Bipolar TURP is often preferred for patients with higher risk factors, as it offers greater safety and precision during the procedure.

Both monopolar and bipolar TURP are effective in treating BPH and offer similar outcomes in terms of symptom relief. The choice of technique depends on the patient’s health status, surgeon’s expertise, and available technology.

Common Symptoms Indicating the Need for TURP

  • Difficulty starting urination
  • Weak or interrupted urine flow
  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Urgency to urinate
  • Inability to completely empty the bladder
  • Urinary tract infections

Why This Procedure is Important?

An enlarged prostate can significantly impact quality of life and, if left untreated, may lead to severe complications such as urinary retention, bladder stones, kidney damage, and recurrent urinary tract infections. TURP effectively alleviates these symptoms by removing excess prostate tissue, thus restoring normal urinary function and preventing further health issues related to BPH.
